Louis E. Scott

Louis (Lou) E. Scott, 79, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on February 1, 2024. He was with his loving wife of 21 years and family members at the time of his passing. His family was most important to him, and he loved them deeply. His children grew up in DeSoto, KS and provided some of his favorite memories. He was a volunteer there, helping keep his community safe from fire and providing care and transport by ambulance for the surrounding area. Lou was also a small business owner. He owned and operated a home inspection business, ABC Inspection, in and around the Kansas City area for over 15 years. Completing inspections for homeowners and businesses was his true life's work. He loved providing his customers with detailed reports and showing how thorough inspections really matter when you’re buying a home. At his day job he worked in the maintenance department at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, and did similar work at Danisco, where he and his wife Shirley first met. Lou was an avid beekeeper. He kept hives in their backyard for a number of years and was a member of the Northeast Kansas Beekeepers Association, where shared knowledge of beekeeping was discussed amongst other members. Lou could more often than not be found tending to his bees, especially in the summer months. The reward was being able to give honey as a gift, which made him happy. He was a lover of all things DIY around the house. From replacing aged windows to installing flooring, Lou enjoyed working with his wife Shirley on their home. When he and Shirley were married, they joked that they should have had their ceremony at the Home Depot. Lou loved to explore and travel. He also loved to share his travels with others. One of his most memorable trips was to Mayaysia to visit his daughter Ginny and her husband in 2009. Being a certified scuba diver, he spent a good part of this trip diving with her. While there, he was also able to take a very special dive with a guide in an area famous for diverse marine habitats in turquoise waters. This was off the coast of Sabah, Malaysia, near the island of Sipadan. Stories of his dive in this particular area were among his favorites to share with family and friends, as the area is well known for the huge Ligitan reef system. Volunteering with the University of Kansas Paleontology Department was a point of pride for Lou. He went on dinosaur digs in several northern and western states. He was always pleased with the contributions his donated time made to the University. Lou was happiest when he could take walks in the woods or go canoeing on the river, where he found some amazing things. He was always excited to share the stories behind the meteorites, fossils, and Native American Indian items he found on these frequent excursions. His children grew up loving the outdoors, because of his guidance. Lou is preceded in death by his daughter (Virginia (Ginny) Park), his brother (Bill Scott), and sister (Julia Shaffer). He is survived by his wife (Shirley McCann), brother (Paul Scott), daughter (Candace (Candy) Drost), daughter (Kimberly (Kim) Scott), son (Christopher (Chris) Scott), stepdaughter (Mandi Thacker), stepson (Scott Swank), three sons-in-law, a daughter-in-law, and numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. We will definitely miss his smile, his laugh, and, of course, his stories. Rest in peace Lou. A private service for the family will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Maple Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, KS.
