CECIL EUGENE YOUNG Cecil Eugene Young was born on July 18, 1954 in Kansas City, Mo to parents Cecil R. and Geraldine Young. He passed away early Tuesday morning, January 27th, surrounded by loved ones in his home. Cecil was a longtime electrician at The Kansas City Star for more than three decades. Even when sparks were literally flying, Cecil was calm, patient and kept his sense of humor. It instilled confidence in those who worked with him. Cecil was known as simply the best at his craft. He was a kind friend, a patient teacher, a loyal leader and a diligent professional. Being an electrician for The Star is a whole lot more than keeping the lights on. Cecil knew all the ins and outs of its production operation and was a problem-solver everyone turned to and counted on. Cecil made friends and earned admirers wherever he went and was comfortable explaining his work and sharing his knowledge with everyone from children to CEOs. He recently was presented with The Star’s Full Nelson Award, which is the highest award that recognizes excellence and is named for the company’s founder. When not indulging his grandchildren or cheering on KU basketball, Cecil could be found entertaining in an elaborate backyard oasis that he designed and built. Many unforgettable memories were made in this paradise he called home. Cecil loved yard work and tending the grill while watching his children and grandchildren swim in the pool. Cecil was very competitive and loved to challenge his kids at anything he thought he could win. He would then exclaim “it’s time for a dip” and do a cannon ball off the diving board. He adored his family and doted on his children, always ready to share a story with little prompting. Cecil enjoyed activities such as backyard badminton, camping trips, floating down the river and any other activity as long as it was with his friends and family. Look around the room and you will find a hogpodge of stories that will make you laugh and realize the heart of gold that was Cecil Young. The world was a better place when Cecil walked this earth. He was a man of intelligence, integrity and patience. His laugh was contagious, his smile brightened ever corner. His love for family was unconditional and if ever anyone was in need he was a phone call away. Cecil is survived by his beloved wife Pam. His son Jason Young and longtime girlfriend Andrea; daughter Tonya Dickerson and husband Scott and daughter Megan Young and longtime boyfriend Blake. He was the proud grandpa to Cailyn and Hailey Dickerson, and Linkin Henry. He is also survived by his mother, Geraldine Thompson; sister Lora Blackwell and husband Sonny and sister Della Willis and husband Bob. He is preceded in death by his father, Cecil Ray Young, and his brother Jerry Ray Young. He will be dearly missed by those whose lives he touched.
