Guadalupe G. Martinez

Guadalupe Martinez, 93, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully Friday, December 16, 2022, at her home. A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at St. John the Evangelist Church in Kansas City, Kansas, with funeral mass will beginning at 11 a.m., and burial to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Guadalupe was born, September 12, 1929, in Guillermo Prieto, Durango, Mexico, daughter of Rafael Gardea Rocha and Delores Barrientos Gardea. Guadalupe is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eduardo Martinez; her beloved son John Martinez and all her siblings (six brothers and three sisters). She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Martinez, son, Rudy Martinez and nephew Antonio Gardea (Guadalajara, Mexico). She leaves behind her beloved granddaughters; Alicia Frees (Kevin); Lisa Martinez (Jose); Anissa Washington (Dominique); Amanda Robertson (Kevin); Johnna Hubbard (Brian); Kristy Bartimioli (Chris); Celeste Didier (Taylor); Vanessa Lopez (Ramon). Great-grandchildren Andrew and Luke; Emma and Oliver; Melanie; Scott and Ava; Brodie, Gage and Kannon; Quinten, Isaiah and Kiera; Camden, Christian and Cambri; Ercilia, Julian and Yaretzi; Many other nieces and nephews, her wonderful neighbors and friends. Guadalupe was the matriarch of her family, and she had many names, Lupe, Lupita, Señora, Doña, but she was most proud of Memers the name given to her by her great grandchildren who were her greatest love. She lived by her faith serving others in need by sharing whatever she had to offer and the countless others she helped along the way. She always offered anyone that stopped by a meal, a cold drink or a cup of coffee. She would often share her stories of her childhood and all her struggles she endured. She was a great listener and always had kind words for those who just needed encouragement. She worked many jobs to provide for her three children. She was an entrepreneur and owner of El Aguila Record Shop on the Westside and was known for the best Mexican music. After her retirement, she was happy babysitting many, many kids including her grandchildren, great grandchildren and bonus grandchildren that also became part of her extended family and called her grandma. Especially Nana, Tony, Jessica, Emilio, Cuca and many, many others. Guadalupe had many hobbies and talents. She was an excellent cook, a seamstress who could fix anything. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing and made sure we all got a blanket and pillow that she handcrafted to our liking to keep us warm. She enjoyed gardening and made sure her flowers would bloom from March to September so she could sit outside and enjoy their beauty. We will miss her greatly. We are grateful for her wonderful and amazing neighbors and friends especially her Angel de la Guarda Blas and Marta Ledezma. Her special neighbors Roman and Lisa Guerra who always made sure she was safe. Annie Gonzalez for her caring phone calls and crocheting projects. Teresita and John Nino for never forgetting her friendship, Roberto and Teresa Martinez, and Helen Mendez. A special thank you to Appl Orchard Hospice for their care and support they provided.
