Reta Lanell McVaugh

Reta Lanell (Asher) McVaugh was born February 28, 1933 in St. Catherine, MO to Earl Wayne and Clara Marie Asher. Reta graduated high school in Marceline, Missouri in 1951. Reta married Warren York on October 7, 1951 in Marceline, Missouri. They were married for 22 years, Reta and Warren were blessed with two sons, Dewayne and Scott. In 1972 she married Jack McVaugh. They were married for 14 years, when Jack passed away in 1986 at age of 51. Reta worked at various jobs during her adult life; 2 different banks, a square dance shop and The Record newspaper, Reta attended a nail technician school and become a professional manicurist and opened her own shop. She worked there until she retired in 2015 at the age of 82. Reta’s talents were numerous. Amongst them were crocheting, sewing, baking and cake decorating. Also, she was always so thoughtful to remember family and friends’ birthdays with gifts, cards, and phone calls. Reta committed her life to Christ at the age of 12 at Pedan Chapel Church in Marceline, Missouri. She was baptized in Mussel Fork Creek. After moving to the Kansas City area she became a member of Emerson Park Christian Church in Kansas City, Kansas. In her later years, due to health, Reta had been continuing her faith walk by watching church services on TV. Reta was also a member of the national organization of Parents of Murdered Children, Inc. Reta’s boys, Scott and Dewayne, were her greatest joy. Celebrating birthdays, family events, and raising them brought her so much pride and purpose. Later in life, when Scott & Brenda had Megan, she found more joy in being a grandma. Showing her love by doing nails, playing dress up, baking, and playing games. She will always wear the name of mom and grandma the proudest. Reta was blessed with many friends who were always there to help in any way they could. Reta was preceded in death by her husband Jack McVaugh; the boys father, Warren York; oldest son Dewayne York; her parents Wayne and Marie Asher; 4 brothers - Alton, Gilbert, Carlos and Harley Asher; 1 sister Clara Smith. Reta is survived by her son Scott York, his wife Brenda and granddaughter Megan York; one sister Joyce Brecheisen and husband Howard and numerous nieces and nephews.
