Richard Michael “Mike” Wilson, 78, of Tonganoxie, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his devoted family. Born June 4, 1947, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Richard A. and Evelyn J. Wilson, Mike lived a life defined by hard work, faith, and an unwavering desire to serve others. For 35 years, he worked as a Railroad Engineer, proudly serving his fellow workers through the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. As president of Union #777 and active member of #130, he was deeply respected for his wisdom, common sense, and readiness to step in whenever someone needed guidance or support. Mike’s giving nature extended far beyond his career. Throughout their marriage, Mike and Kathryn were active in their church communities, always giving their time and resources wherever they worshiped. Their shared faith guided their generosity, and together they made a practice of caring for others, whether through a warm meal, a helping hand, or simple kindness. After Kathryn’s passing, Mike became devoted to Calvary Lawrence Church, where he continued that legacy of service, volunteering often and offering encouragement to anyone in need. Mike truly embodied a servant’s heart—never hesitating to help, encourage, or provide for others. Though service defined him, Mike also made room for joy. He loved the game of golf, especially with his good friend Bob and brother Steve, and found peace in the outdoors through camping, fishing, and hunting. He never missed a chance to cheer for KU basketball or the Kansas City Chiefs, and he and Kathryn enjoyed antiquing adventures together. Above all, he cherished family. Holidays, reunions, and simple gatherings were always treasured times where his laughter and warmth filled the room. Mike was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Kathryn Ann Wilson; his son, Paul Wilson; sister, Carol Wilson; son-in-law Rick Groves; brother-in-law, Ray Patrick; and his parents. He is survived by his children: Richard Wilson, Christina Groves, Kathleen Curry (Bryce), Rebecca Hurla (Kyle), and daughter-in-law Katie Wilson. He leaves behind a legacy of love in his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Patricia Essman, Alexis Wilson, Xavier Wilson, Brandon Ogden (Ruth), Chelsea Petersen (Shane), Kaylee Mather, Mackenzie Curry, Brandon Curry, Kalista Curry, Allison Hurla, Kenneth Hurla (Hannah), Austin Hurla (McKinna), Kristopher Hurla, Adam Hurla (Katey), Avery Wilson (Megan), Aiden Brown, Audrey Wilson, Meryssa Peebles (Peyton), Sarah Wilson, fifteen great-grandchildren with one on the way; as well as his siblings Steve Wilson (Trina), Judy Schraeder, Karen Patrick, Teresa Schuchardt (Frank), and many nieces and nephews A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at Maple Hill Cemetery. A celebration of Mike’s life will follow from 5:00–8:00 PM at The 304 Venue (304 E 4th St, Tonganoxie, KS 66086). Mike’s life was a testimony to kindness, service, and generosity, always rooted in his strong faith. In his final conversations with his grandchildren, he shared the gospel with them—something he never missed an opportunity to do. His greatest hope was that those he loved would know the peace and promise he found in Christ. His legacy of love, faith, and service will live on in the many lives he touched.
