Steve Chowning

Steven “Pid” Chowning, 64, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away February 4, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. A visitation will be held from 5:00-6:00 PM with a Celebration of Life beginning at 6:00 PM Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at the Maple Hill Funeral Home. Steve was the fifth son of Gertrude and Willard Chowning. He had five brothers, collectively, “the Chowning Boys.” Steve devoted his life to his family and his faith in God. Steve did not have any children of his own; but, he did have twelve nieces and nephews who all had a very special relationship with “Uncle Piddy-Poo.” Then, his twelve nieces and nephews started producing an unknown (to me) number of great-nieces and nephews. But, Steve knew every one of them and made them all feel special at Christmas time (We know that you were Santa, Pid, but we sure loved playing along). Steve knew how to enjoy life and bring joy to others. He was one of those great-big-kid kind of guys. Steve built jungle gyms, tire swings, and snow ramps. He took us on motorcycle rides and coached our softball teams and went on vacations with us all. He did his best to annoy us to tears when we were younger and Grandma would yell, "Now Pid cut it out, leave it be". He brought home pizza and loud fireworks and he could fix just about anything. As we held his hand and watched him go home, we could almost hear the Chowning bus shifting gears to pick him up. The sound of the door opening and Grandma yelling his name. She missed him most. Now, Grandma has another son sitting at her kitchen table in heaven. Preceding Steven in death, along with his mother and father, are his brothers: Jimmy and Timmy. Along with faithful dogs, Buddy and Howard, nearby, we can picture everyone crowded in that little kitchen laughing and goofing and smiling. Steve leaves behind three brothers and four sister-in-laws: Vicki Chowning, Robert Chowning, Karen Chowning, Carleen Chowning, Gary Chowning, Stacy Chowning, and Lynette Chowning; and, twelve nieces and nephews: Kristen Chowning Martin, Stephanie Damron, Denise Chowning, Kandi Crumet, Kim Chowning, Robbie Chowning, Cammie Reynolds, Joey Chowning, Troy Chowning, Jessica Balecotcha, Tracy Chowning, and Brandi Good, and innumerable great-nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Fair Haven Baptist Church, 1111 Douglas Ave, Kansas City, Kansas 66103.
