Her life was the “stuff” of a solid romantic novel….long and complicated. She came of age during WW2 and fulfilled her duty as a citizen and woman. Charlene was a woman of passion and intellect, with sharp verbal, and mathematical skills. She was a telephone company operator, and also mastered various duties such as cashier, payroll and accounting. She had deep friendships from early life who she inspired, entertained, and kept loyalty especially as they passed, one by precious one. She had a deep faith in Christian principles from early Methodist, then Presbyterian, Congregationalist, and even attended Catholic and Orthodox as an honored guest and participant. She enjoyed 40’s Jitterbug & Swing to New Century Waltz/Polka & Square Dance. Mom also loved books, traveling, crosswords, news, sports (especially the Kansas City Chiefs), game shows, sewing alterations, quilting, walks in parks and gardens. She mentored and taught her children to love and respect and set a higher bar for our lives. She supported each of us in our chosen professions, all in very direct and tangible ways. It’s clear to her three children how much each were wanted and cherished, even including her last pregnancy which ended in stillbirth pre-maturely. She died mourning that little potential boy. Goodbye mom. Now Steve and I can accept our mortality and the fear of wounding a surviving parent, and it’s now down to each of us boys. Well done! The family extends their utmost gratification and recognition to their entire staff of “Reflection Living” for their personalized and dignified care of our mother. Particularly the overwhelming and beautiful 97th birthday celebration afforded to her. In lieu of flowers, recognition of the efforts may be made through contributions in care of Maple Hill Funeral Home with the notation “RL Kansas City 1”
