James Floyd Monteil Sr.

June 12, 1937 - May 30, 2020

Peacefully and comfortably in the bed he shared with the love of his life for 52 years, James Floyd Monteil Sr., 82, of Kansas City, KS went to be with our Lord on the morning of May 30, 2020. More commonly known as “the old man” to loved ones and friends, he lived a life filled with lots of laughter, family, and good ole-fashion hard work. James was born on June 12, 1937 in Kansas City to George “Ed” and Thelma Monteil. On November 26, 1960 he married the love of his life, Barbara Monteil. They shared an incredible 52 year marriage exemplifying true companionship and love for all who knew them. He is survived by his three sons, James F. Monteil, Jr., Houston, TX, Ed Monteil, Anchorage, AK and David Monteil, Fontana, KS, two daughters, Cecilia Monteil and Marsha Malagarie, both of Kansas City, KS, 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and two brothers, George Monteil Jr. and John Monteil. With unwavering work ethic and pride in the working man, he served as a Teamster Union Steward for many years defending the rights of his colleagues. He was also famous for a good side-hustle sometimes as the Tomato Man selling over 2000 lbs in one day, and at other times truly living by the words “one man’s trash is another’s treasure” as he was well-known for being a collector of many. He enjoyed family and friends above all else and created family everywhere he went. He enjoyed a good hunting/fishing trip to Alaska every year, participating in the Shawnee Great Grillers Blue and Barbecue competition for over 20 years, tailgating at a Chiefs game and weekends at his hunting lodge in Norton with his closest buddies. Including his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Barbara, and a brother, Charles Monteil. A graveside visitation will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, June 5, 2020 with services beginning at 2:00 P.M. at the Maple Hill Cemetery.
