    Shirley Jean Reed

    May 13, 1941 - May 18, 2021

    Shirley Jean Reed, 80, born May 13, 1941 in Kansas City, Missouri to Velva Lee Mitchell Ramsey and Edward Hopkins. Step daughter of Lawrence Ramsey. Shirley had 4 siblings, Alford Murry Hopkins, Randolf Hopkins, Edward Hopkins and Verceena L. Brown-Coody. Shirley Jean Hopkins Reed married the love of her life, Willie E. Reed Sr. Together they had 5 sons, Willie Reed, Azar R. Reed, Willie E. Reed Jr., Roderick E. Reed and Corydon M. Reed; and daughter, Suncia Renay Reed. Her husband Willie E. Reed Sr. and her son, Azar Reed preceed her in death. Shirley resided in Leavenworth, Kansas and later moved to Kansas City, Kansas with her husband and children. She worked and attended night nursing school and earned her LPN, RN and BSN. For the majority of her life, she worked for Wadsworth Military Hopsital before working at Medical Lodge West where she was the director of nursing. Once she retired, she still did private duty cases until her full retirement. Shirley gave her life to the Lord and believed in Jesus Christ as a young girl. She joined with the late pastor, Henry W. Bowens, Willie E. Reed Sr., and sister Eva Lois Williams and started Calvary Baptist Church located at 901 Waverly Avenue, then later Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She is the last remaining charter member, until her health stopped her church attendance. Shirley Reed, AKA Mamma Reed, was Mamma to many. On May 13, 1941 she turned 80. On May 18, 2021, The Lord called her home at 3:40 P.M., she answered him and fell asleep. Shirley Reed leaves remaining children, Willie Reed, Willie E. Reed Jr., Roderick E Reed Sr., Suncia R Reed and Corydon M. Reed; 2 siblings, Randolf Hopkins and Verceena L. Brown Coody; sister in law, Sandy Hopkins and a host of nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
