Melvin Leroy Woolery

Melvin Leroy Woolery age 87 of Mission, KS passed away Friday, March 10, 2017 at the K.C. Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born March 24, 1929 in Kansas City, Kansas the son of William Ezekial and Ina Blanche (Cantrell) Woolery. He grew up in Argentine and graduated from Argentine High School in Kansas City, Kansas the class 1947. On May 7, 1949 Melvin was united in marriage to Shirley May Kunze at the Ruby Avenue Congregational Church of Kansas City, Kansas. They shared over forty eight years of marriage before Shirley passed away on February 7, 1998. To this union they shared two children, Craig William and Karen Lee. Melvin was a meat cutter for over forty five years. He started working in the meat department of a local grocery store at the age of fifteen. He never left the industry and he worked the majority of his time at various A & P Food Stores all over the Kansas City metro area. He retired in 1995 at the age of sixty-five. Melvin enjoyed golfing, photography and playing pool. Bowling was Melvin’s favorite hobby. He even worked part time for a few bowling alleys and bowled right up to the day he passed. Melvin was always pretty independent but caring and giving. Most all, Melvin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be missed by his family and many friends that he loved so much and his spirit will be expressed in all of their daily lives forever. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; William and Ina; and his wife Shirley. Melvin is survived by his two children, Karen Lee Shump and her husband William of Manhattan, Kansas and Craig William Woolery and his wife Barbara of Overland Park, Kansas; one brother Larry Allen Woolery and his wife Gloria of Omaha, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Sarah Kathleen Christopher and her husband Jesse of Ottawa, Kansas, Christine Elizabeth Long and her husband Mike of Ottawa, Kansas, Rebecca Anne Woolery of Ottawa, Kansas and Caleb William Woolery and his wife Callie of Overland Park, Kansas; twenty four great grandchildren; and his nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Maple Hill Funeral Home in Kansas City, Kansas. A visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. Thursday, March 16, 2017 at the Maple Hill Funeral Home. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas.
