Miguel Echavarria

Miguel Echavarria, a man whose heart knew no bounds, touched the lives of countless souls during his 73 years on earth. Born on a warm summer day in El Paso, Texas, Miguel was a devoted husband, loving father, caring grandfather, and a proud Navy veteran, whose spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those he loved and helped. Miguel's devotion to his family was the cornerstone of his life. He shared 50 years of pure love and companionship with his wife, Jessie Echavarria. His love was endless, and it flourished as he supported each of his children’s individual endeavors. Beyond his own children, Miguel's compassionate heart extended to his 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He cherished every moment spent with them, finding immense joy in their laughter and achievements. Miguel's dedication to service was evident not only during his time in the Navy, where he served aboard the USS Fresno 1182 as a PO 3rd class E5 from May 12, 1969, through February 2, 1973, but also in his tireless efforts to help children in his community. As a tutor and mentor, he lent a helping hand to those who faced language barriers and challenges in their education. He selflessly advocated and translated for parents navigating the complexities of the Kansas City School System, ensuring that every child had an equal chance to succeed. Beyond his altruism, Miguel had a range of hobbies that brought joy to his life. He loved spending time in the great outdoors, finding solace in hunting, fishing, and camping. His playful side was evident through his love of telling dry dad jokes and performing magic tricks that would delight both young and old. His appreciation for diverse music genres enriched his life, and his skill in working on cars brought smiles to the faces of those who sought his expertise. On June 29, 2023, surrounded by his loving family, Miguel peacefully passed away at Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesus Echavarria and Tomasa Serna, as well as his brother Salvador Echavarria, sister Maria Estela Borunda, and daughter Angelica Echavarria. Miguel is survived by his devoted wife, Jessie Echavarria, and their children: Miguel Echavarria Jr (Kara), Daniel Echavarria, David Echavarria (Josephine), Christina Echavarria, Rebeca Avila, and Patricia Bowers- Echavarria (Gary Murray). He also leaves behind his cherished grandson, Jessie Echavarria, whom he raised as his own son, grandchildren: DeMarko Echavarria, Antonio Echavarria, Diego Echavarria, Alejandro Echavarria, Ella Echavarria, Eva Echavarria, Ezekiel Echavarria, Julia Avila, Nicholas Avila, Gabriel Echavarria, Alexandra Echavarria, Jesse Laijo(Lizeth Rocha), James Laijo, Atina Laijo, Admetha Laijo, Alana Peregrina, Adrian Murray, Jayla Murray, Owen Murray, Julian Murray, and great- grandchildren: Carter Vandik, Valentina Angel Echavarria, and JJ Laijo. Visitation to honor and remember Miguel will be held at Maple Hill Funeral Home, 3300 Shawnee Dr, Kansas City, KS 66106, on Wednesday, July 5th, from 6:00pm-8:00pm. A Rosary service will commence at 6:00pm. The Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel, 3934 Washington Street, Kansas City, MO 64111 on Thursday, July 6th at 8:00am. Funeral Procession leaves sharply at 12:30pm from Maple Hills Funeral home. Burial 1:30pm at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, KS 66048. Reception to follow at IBEW Local 124, 301 E. 103rd Terrace, Kansas City, MO, 64114.
